Water Features (Fountains, Ponds)

In landscape architecture and garden design, a water feature is one or more items from a range of fountains, pools, ponds, cascades, waterfalls, and streams. ... The advantages of using solar power include environmental benefits, no electrical lines in the garden, and free energy.

Landscape design is an independent profession and a design and art tradition, practiced by landscape designers, combining nature and culture. In contemporary practice, landscape design bridges the space between landscape architecture and garden design.

A mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of soil. Reasons for applying mulch include conservation of soil moisture, improving fertility and health of the soil, reducing weed growth and enhancing the visual appeal of the area.

Irrigation is the application of controlled amounts of water to plants at needed intervals. Irrigation helps grow agricultural crops, maintain landscapes, and revegetate disturbed soils in dry areas and during periods of inadequate rainfall.

In some areas, terms as water-conserving landscapes, drought-tolerant landscaping, and smart scaping are used instead. Plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to the local climate are emphasized, and care is taken to avoid losing water to evaporation and run-off. The specific plants used in xeriscaping depend upon the climate. Xeriscaping is different from natural landscaping, because the emphasis in xeriscaping is on selection of plants for water conservation, not necessarily selecting native plants.

A fire pit or a fire hole can vary from a pit dug in the ground to an elaborate gas burning structure of stone, brick, and metal. The common feature of fire pits is that they are designed to contain fire and prevent it from spreading.

Cedar Trimming

Cedar hedges and bushes are great privacy screens and wind barriers, as they have very dense foliage. Cedars can grow about 3-6 inches a year in width and a foot or more in height. Regular trimming and shaping is needed to control this annual growth, and to keep the width of the hedge the same. Most cedars have a personality so it is important to know how much you should trim them, with importance given not to create a hole to expose the interior. Hedges that encroach on driveways, sidewalks and pools require more attention to inhibit large outward growth.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are relatively rigid walls used for supporting the soil mass laterally so that the soil can be retained at different levels on the two sides. Retaining walls are structures designed to restrain soil to a slope that it would not naturally keep to (typically a steep, near-vertical or vertical slope). They are used to bound soils between two different elevations often in areas of terrain possessing undesirable slopes or in areas where the landscape needs to be shaped severely and engineered for more specific purposes like hillside farming or roadway overpasses.

Paver Patios, Walkways, and Flagstones

Pavers are a popular choice for backyard patios. They provide a beautiful, custom paving solution that installs quickly and is ready for use as soon as the project is complete. Pavers allow for a lot of design creativity and can be used on small or large patios. Patio pavers are made of concrete, brick or stone. They come in a variety of shapes and colors. However, the real draw of pavers is that they can be laid in striking patterns.
